SUBJECTS AND METHODS PATIENTS, ANALYTICAL CONSIDERATIONS, SCOPING, AND SCIENTIFIC DETAILS Subjects and methods All subjects were healthy, hospitalized children (ages 12–15 years) with an acute sinus infection no evidence of systemic illness or significant inflammation as noted by conventional bronchoscopy, chest radiography, or bronchoscopy-guided bronchoscopy. All patients had an initial positive result on bronchospasm test (BST) for pneumococcal pharyngitis. Children with positive and rechecked respiratory cultures were excluded from participation. Patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) and/or cardiac conduction abnormalities were also excluded because most studies indicate that conduction abnormalities could lead to adverse outcomes (11–13).
